What Is the NMMSS Scholarship?
NMMSS is a central government scheme made to help bright students from weaker economic families. Many good students leave school after Class VIII because of money problems. This scholarship gives them a reason to stay in school and study till Class XII.
Every year, one lakh fresh scholarships are given to Class IX students who pass the selection exam conducted by their State or UT government. After that, the scholarship continues from Class X to Class XII through renewal, as long as the student meets the academic rules.
NMMSS Eligibility Criteria
Before you apply, check that you meet these conditions:
- You must be studying in a state government, government-aided or local body school.
- You must have passed the NMMSS selection test conducted by your State/UT.
- To appear in the selection test, you must have scored at least 55% marks or equivalent grade in Class VII.
- SC/ST students get a 5% relaxation, so they need at least 50%.
- Your parents’ yearly income must not be more than Rs. 3.50 lakh from all sources.
- For renewal, you must meet the academic requirements set by the scheme.
Required Documents Checklist
- Identity proof of the applicant (linked with active mobile number).
- Recent Passport Size Photograph (JPEG/PNG format).
- Educational Mark Sheets (Previous Year / Qualifying Examination Passed).
- Income Certificate issued by a competent authority (Tehsildar/SDO).
- Domicile / Residential Certificate of the respective state.
- Caste / Category Certificate (if applying under SC/ST/OBC/EWS quotas).
- Bank Account Passbook front page (showing Account No. and IFSC code).
- Active Admission Receipt or Institution Bonafide Certificate.
How to Apply for NMMSS 2026-27 on NSP
- Open the NSP website. Go to the official National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in.
- Complete One-Time Registration (OTR). Every student must do OTR first. Without OTR, you cannot apply.
- Login. Use your OTR ID and password to log in.
- Select the scheme. Choose National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) from the list.
- Fill the application form. Enter your personal, school, family income and bank details carefully.
- Upload documents. Upload clear scans of the required papers in the given size and format.
- Submit and save. Click final submit, then download the acknowledgement slip and keep a printout.
- Get it verified. Meet your school’s Nodal Officer so your form is verified before 15 November 2026.
Why Verification Matters
Many students submit the form but miss the next step. After you apply, your application goes to the Institute Nodal Officer (L1) and then to the District Nodal Officer (L2). If your form is not verified, it can be rejected, and you will not get the money. So after applying, contact your school and ask them to verify it on time.
Example: How It Works for a Student
This is only an example to help you understand.
Riya studies in Class IX in a government school. She scored 58% in Class VII, her family earns ₹2.8 lakh a year, and she cleared her state’s NMMSS selection exam. In October, she completes her OTR, fills the NMMSS form on NSP and uploads her documents. She then gives the acknowledgement slip to her school nodal officer. After L1 and L2 verification, ₹12,000 for the year comes into her bank account through DBT.
Important Tips for Students
- Do not wait for 31 October. Apply early to avoid website slowdown.
- Use the same name and date of birth as on your Aadhaar and school records.
- Make sure your bank account is active and linked properly for DBT.
- Keep your OTR ID and password safe for future renewals.
- Follow up with your school for L1 verification.
